Occupational Health Physio
Keeping your employees moving
Sickness absence costs the UK around £15 billion annually in lost economic output(1). Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) affect 1 in 4 adults and approximately 60% of people on long term sick leave cite musculoskeletal disorders as a cause. Rapid access to musculoskeletal physiotherapists can reduce the amount of time people are off sick and is vital in preventing a new acute problem becoming chronic and long lasting.(2)
Kendal physiotherapy can provide onsite or offsite services that are tailored to the requirements of your business. Physiotherapy involvement onsite allows for rapid access to assessment and treatment and reduces time off work through injury or to attend external appointments. Our offsite services allow small to medium sized businesses with fewer employees rapid access to physiotherapy treatment.
For every £1 invested in our occupational health services businesses can typically see a return of £4 and £8. In addition staff who stay in work recover more quickly and have increased productivity.
Kendal physiotherapy have provided occupational health services to several large local employers including James Croppers, The North West ambulance service, University Hospital of Morecombe Bay NHS Foundation trust and the Langdale hotel and spa.
Services
Telephone triage
Our telephone triage service provides your employees with immediate access to a qualified physiotherapist over the phone, who can provide a detailed assessment, as well as tailored advice and education. Acting as a triage service, they can refer the employee onto further, face to face treatment if necessary, or provide information and help to self-manage.
Display screen assessments
Computer workstations or equipment can be associated with neck, shoulder, back or arm pain, as well as with fatigue and eyestrain. Display Screen Equipment are a major contributor to this. Kendal physiotherapy provide a comprehensive assessment service and deliver a detailed report to identify key risks and areas for improvement.
Workplace assessments
Delivered to any individual with an MSD, these are assessments carried out at the employee’s workplace or workstation, identifying any potential risks that could cause or further aggravate an MSD. A detailed report can then be produced for both the individual and the employer, supporting the most efficient route back to work possible.
Case Study
In 2012, Staffordshire County Council contracted a private occupational health physiotherapy company to reduce their sickness absences.
This rapid access physiotherapy service begins with a telephone triage. This allows contact with the employee within 24 hours of being off work. During the call the nature of the problem is established with self management advice and exercises discussed. A face-to-face physiotherapy appointment can then arranged at a convenient time and location for the employee if necessary.
Since the start of this rapid access physiotherapy programme, Staffordshire County Council has found a reduction of 1,000 lost work days per month which amounts to a saving of £100,000 per month. A service to prevent sickness and injury is currently being piloted to reduce absences even further.

Neil BogginJune 10, 2023After a knee injury playing table tennis, the team were excellent at diagnosing the problem & setting up a slow & steady recovery routine - lots of stretching, massage & strength exercises. Am back playing TT & heading back on the hills!!C BJune 7, 2023I went to Kendal Physio after experiencing problems with my thumb and wrist for about 8 weeks. I’d tried rest, You Tube video ‘fixes’ (which made it worse) and then decided it was time to stop wasting time and go to see a physio. Mary was great at pinpointing the problem and setting me up with a series of exercises to do at home. These had a rapid effect and I felt some marked improvement quite quickly, especially as regards pain management. The exercises were adapted and changed with each visit, to ensure a full movement range could be achieved by the end of the course of treatments. I found it particularly useful to have all the exercises sent through on an email that contained short videos of every exercise. Mary is fantastic, really thorough in diagnosing/assessing , and careful to ensure each exercise is clearly understood and carried out before leaving the practice. I absolutely recommend Kendal Physio!Hilary PickupMay 18, 2023Very friendly, caring and helpful centre. My physio diagnosed my problem, gave me some treatment and gave me exercises to follow.
